Famous horses and their unique stories uplift us all. We often find in the hearts of horses , the essence of our own best and deepest characteristics.

They teach us well and of many things: courage, steadfastness, generosity, nobility, elegance, grace, freedom. Without thinking about it, they are fully themselves . By just being what they always already are, they carry us home if we allow it. There is so frequently such a wondrous bond that only a horse and his/her human know ... they inspire us, lift our spirits, carry us out of the mundane. Famous horses, their stories and a study of bloodlines, where possible, is of high value to horsemen and horse lovers.

The urge to be with horses can take hold at any age, and we feel the mysterious promise of an ancient freedom. Horsemen refer to the look of eagles in their eyes (eyes... those windows of the secret world... of horses, eagles and friends)! The author of the articles presented here of famous horses, and often of their people too, began his personal saga in the company of horses, some time ago.

Ross Millin grew up in Robertson, South Africa, where a big local Saddle Horse Show is held each year in October. Here the famous " Young America" and other horses who were to become famous were shown and judged by American judges like Eddie Barham and Marty Mueller.

Ross was the official photographer at many of the local Shows, Indoor Shows at Goodwood and also at the National Championship Horse Show at Bloemfontein. After qualifying as a Medical Doctor he specialised in Anatomical Pathology. Time to attend horse shows and taking pictures got less and work pressure unfortunately forced him to stop working as official photographer.

In 1997 a dream was fulfilled when Dr. Millin bought his first Saddlebred mare from Jack Schoeman of Phillipolis. Miss Tinkerbelle later became the dam of the gelding Tornado's Heirloom who has been a ribbon winner at Bloemfontein and Champion at local shows.

Today Ross owns Newline Saddle Horse Stud, which was started in 1997. One of the first horses bred by Newline was Tornado's Perfect Timing ([SA]Tornaado x Sun Queen) who became Newline's first S.A. Champion in 2001 where he was crowned S.A. Champion Two Year Old Fine Harness Horse with Kevin Eltringham at the whip.

Ross identified a lack of information on the web about the history of Famous Saddle Horses and produced a website, www.newlineza.com where vast information and photographs of S.A. Saddlebreds as well as American Saddlebreds can be seen and read about.

He also attends the Kentucky State Fair regularly and supplies pictures of the show for the general public on his website.

Currently Ross writes a regular column for the South African Magazine, S.A. Show Horse, about the history and bloodlines of some of the great Saddlebreds of both the past and present.
